TRIO ThinkQuest - Large Scale Project
In 2001, the University of Washington TRIO Training approached the International educational web site competition, ThinkQuest, for permission to form TRIO ThinkQuest for TRIO students. The UW had been competing in the international competition for two years prior to 2001 and recognized that international competition was beyond the experience of a typical TRIO student (TRIO students come from various federal programs: Early Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services, McNair, and COE). TRIO ThinkQuest would give opportunities to economically disadvantaged and first-generation college students to compete nationally for award and recognition.
Once TRIO ThinkQuest was formed, we (me and my colleagues at UW TRIO Training) began creating example curriculum for other TRIO programs across the country to adapt into their individual programs.
We recognized that students would love the technology side of this competition, building a web site, but that the most important elements, research and writing, would not be as popular. Still, using project-based learning theory, we delved into its creation.
We are in the 4th year of TRIO ThinkQuest, and the results have been phenomenal. Above, you can link to the components and the implementation of the project, as well as an implementation report. |
