Philosophy of Technology Integration

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read or write
but those who cannot
learn, unlearn, and relearn.

~Alvin Toffler

Technology is not going away. Its existence has created a global community, a community that requires advanced communication, decision making and life-long learning. Our students deserve an educational system that weaves these skills into the curriculum.

As technology changes, we must change educational practices. It is essential for the success of our students as well as the success of American society.

Alan Greenspan stated that in today's society, "Workers must be equipped not simply with technical know-how but also with the ability to create, analyze and transform information and to interact effectively with others. Moreover, that learning will increasingly be a life-long activity."

Since the future workers are our students, I see this as a challenge for educators to instruct using a metacognitive approach; educators must help students think about how they are learning, how to take control of their learning, how to assess their progression and how to improve upon their achievements. We can no longer afford to instruct as the expert, but must guide students to become expert learners using the tools that the 21st Century requires.
